ARCANUM XV
The Devil
ATTACHMENT · TEMPTATION · SHADOW · LIBERATION
Upright
The Devil shows you the chains you've agreed to carry—addictions, dependency, a toxic relationship, a pattern that hurts but feels too familiar to let go of. Standing before you, he asks that you look straight at what's binding you and ask: Is this really inevitable, or is it a choice you can undo? The chained couple resembles the Lovers closely—a reminder that desire and imprisonment sometimes wear the same clothes. The chains in this card are loose—you can slip them off anytime. The moment you name the chain, it loses some of the power it held over you.
Reversed
Reversed, the Devil is usually a relief: this is the moment when you recognize the chain and decide to cut it. A sign you're leaving a toxic pattern behind, denial turning into awareness, courage to face your own shadow and work with it instead of running from it. (…)
